A Visual Voice

In A Visual Voice, I explore the expressive potential of domestic and recycled materials through collage. Using remnants of fabric — worn or discarded clothing from my family, as well as leftover materials from previous works — I transform these humble, everyday objects into a visual language that conveys an abstract, personal voice.

I appropriate craft techniques such as stitching, wrapping, and binding, turning repetitive, domestic gestures into a compositional and meditative practice. My hands follow the intricate patterns of threads and fibers, linking what is irregular, fragile, or overlooked into layered, interconnected forms. In doing so, the laborious and seemingly trivial work of women’s hands becomes a source of creative power.

The process of recycling and layering fabric carries a deeper resonance. Older materials are not erased but repurposed, creating a dialogue between past and present layers. This method evokes Christian notions of redemption, where discarded or broken matter is renewed and given new value. Cloth, both universal and culturally specific, becomes a vessel for memory, identity, and transformation.

Through these collages, I seek to show how the domestic, the recycled, and the labor-intensive can give rise to a distinct, abstract visual voice — a testimony to resilience, creativity, and the hidden potential within ordinary materials.
